INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
This album was first released in 2010. We revisited it in 2023 and took another go at it because we felt it could be better. Back then, we were in the habit of constantly traveling to new places to write music. Our passports were filling up fast, and we’d seen so much of the world by that point. We literally reached a stage where we’d spin a globe, stop it with a finger, and wherever it landed, we’d book a flight and go write a new album. It was an incredible time.
For this particular trip, we had our bags packed and were all set to head to Ireland—a place we hadn’t visited yet. Gibson had even given us some new guitars to take along for photos. Our plan was simple: enjoy some shepherd’s pie and Guinness in a local pub, then head out to a meadow to write another record.
On the way to the airport, we heard about a volcanic eruption in Iceland that had grounded all flights from the U.S. to Europe. With only a week off before returning to the studio, we needed to act fast. So, we quickly changed our plans and grabbed a flight to Cancun instead. We left most of our cold-weather clothes in the car and only brought a few things, as we were now headed to the beach.
As soon as we arrived in Mexico, we got straight to work. The first song we wrote was in the hotel room, right after checking in, before we even made it down to the beach. We had a Lonely Planet guidebook on Cuba and considered hopping over there since we were so close. The cover featured a turquoise ’57 Chevy Bel Air, which inspired us to start with a 1950s vibe that eventually became “Moonlight Matinee.” While that song didn’t make the final album and was recut for a different project, it set the tone for everything else we created. Once we reached the beach, we wrote “Where Do I Go Now,” reflecting on our journey and the unexpected turn of events. From there, the rest of the songs flowed effortlessly.
