INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
During this time, I was all over the place stylistically. After leaving Nashville, I kept hearing from everyone that I needed to pick one genre and stick to it. But that just didn’t sit right with me. I knew it would be harder to build a fan base if people couldn’t easily label our sound, but deep down, I believed that if I stayed true to myself, people would eventually get it—maybe even embrace it.

I was also collaborating with a woman named Bahia Brunelle, who lived in Santa Cruz. She’d email me lyrics and concept ideas, and I’d put music to them, tweaking things here and there. It was a unique partnership because we never met in person, only ever communicating through email. Looking back, that feels kind of crazy.

At the time, I was listening to a lot of funk music, which heavily influenced the album’s energy. I was in this phase where I wanted to be more artistically diverse, so I even painted the album cover myself. Around this period, we also started playing some island tours in Hawaii, thanks to a promoter I had met in California. Those tours sparked my fascination with Hawaii, and that love has stayed with me ever since.
