INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
I remember when I was very young, I was introduced to the music of Dion and The Belmonts through my dad’s old albums. Wow! A vocal group from the 1950s singing Doo-Wop—it was like nothing I’d ever heard before. Unfortunately, I didn’t get many opportunities to explore this style personally because it requires multiple harmony singers and a deep bass voice, which just wasn’t easy to find in my era. I was hooked on that sound though, and started hunting down old recordings from similar groups like The Del Vikings, The Chords, and The Teenagers. I couldn’t get enough, but it always felt like an unreachable dream for me to create music like that without the right vocal group.
One day, I was messing around in the studio and decided to try laying down the vocal parts myself. I started with the bass voice and then stacked three more harmonies on top before adding the lead part. It was fun—I could create that classic vocal quartet sound just by overdubbing my own voice. I ended up recording another song, then another, purely for my own enjoyment. Before I knew it, I had a bunch of these things in a matter of days. I kept the arrangements almost identical to how I remembered them from my dad’s old records, and was thrilled with how it all turned out, so I put it together as an album.
