INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
This album might be one of our most “experimental” projects to date. We approached it with a deep sense of curiosity, eager to explore and push the boundaries of genre. I’m a fan of all kinds of music—every genre has something to offer. To me, good music is good music, regardless of the label it carries. With this record, we wanted to see just how far we could stretch and blur those genre lines, creating something unique and interesting while still keeping it accessible and appealing.
Back in 2010, when we first started writing for this album, we were gaining popularity with an underground crowd. We weren’t in the mainstream music scene, and we liked it that way. Our audience was growing purely through word of mouth, and they came to hear our original music, which gave us the freedom to experiment as artists.
One day, while driving with my very young son at the time, Giovanni, I played him The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.” He liked it and asked if it was new. I had to explain that The Beatles had long since disbanded, and some of the members were no longer alive. That moment sparked an idea—how music is a time capsule, capturing the essence of an artist at a specific moment, allowing them to live on forever through their recordings. This thought inspired the song “Unknown Artist.” The concept was about someone, maybe 100 years from now, listening to this record, not knowing who the artist is, but still connecting with the music. Every time they play the record, it brings them back to that moment in time, even long after the artist is gone.
From there, we conceived the album as a story, with each song fitting together sequentially, almost like a play. It was our homage to The Beatles, who pioneered the concept album. At the time, concept albums had fallen out of fashion, so we decided to reintroduce that format.
During this period, I was on a world tour as the music director and co-writer for the pop group Air Supply. We asked them to join us for a track on the album, and they were on board. I had also just completed a project with classical violinist Joshua Bell, who contributed to another track. We even got the Las Vegas Philharmonic to play on the album, inspired by our frequent travels to Europe, particularly Vienna, where classical composers once lived. Their legacy deeply influenced us. I arranged all the parts for the instruments, and we managed to record the entire album in just one day. This album may be the one I’m most proud of.
