INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
This album came together in a whirlwind of inspiration and travel. We initially started on this one Paris back in 2011, and then re-imagened the entire album in 2023. Right after walking past the Moulin Rouge, we headed to a spot in front of the Eiffel Tower. We had baguettes, tangerines, and a few bottles of champagne. Inspired by the iconic club we’d just passed, we had the music for a burlesque-themed song, but the lyrics were elusive. Halfway through our second bottle of champagne, Tony jokingly suggested the title “Tangerine Honey” as he peeled another tangerine. We laughed at first, but then played around with it, and before we knew it, the song came together. Though it didn’t make the final cut for this album and was used in a different project, it was a pivotal moment in the creative process.
The next day in Paris, while doing laundry after recently flying in from Austria, we found ourselves alone in a laundromat. The rhythmic clanking of the washing machines gave us a beat, and we started jamming to it with a pulsing bass line. That groove evolved into the song “12 Dozen Roses.” Later, up in Montmartre, we sat on a park bench at the top of the hill and wrote “Younger Everyday,” capturing the essence of that picturesque spot.
After returning to Vegas for some shows and studio time, we felt the urge to head out again, this time on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Egypt. It was one of the wildest destinations we’d ever chosen. Dressed in traditional garb, we rode camels out to the pyramids with a keytar in tow. In the chaos of the desert and a few close calls with local hustlers, we managed to write “I Betcha.” On the way back to the main gate, I got a call from Syco Entertainment, Simon Cowell’s company, asking me to come to New York immediately to start working on a record with Sony. I was surprised. Not so much by the call, but the mere fact that I had cell service out there.
We decided to cut our trip short by four days. My brothers headed back to Vegas, and I set off for New York. The next day, the hotel we had been staying at in Cairo was bombed. If we had stayed, that might have been our last album. Fate has a strange way of working things out.
In New York, Sony set me up with an apartment, and we began recording some of the songs. I’d fly back to Vegas to perform, but would return to New York for weeks at a time, sometimes even flying to London to work directly with Syco. We demoed all these songs and waited to see which ones would be released. It was an exciting time for sure.
