Five years had passed without releasing an album—just singles. We were so consumed by live performances and touring that we simply didn’t have the time, which was unlike us, as we usually released a new collection of music nearly every year.
I had just signed a deal with a brand new distribution company, and they were eager for me to start putting out content. So, we decided to get to work. The first project we wrote was actually intended for someone else. It was a concept album, almost like a musical or a play. The story centered around an entertainer whose car breaks down in a small town, preventing him from reaching his next show. While stuck there, he meets the girl of his dreams. The whole concept had an Elvis movie vibe.
We finished the entire album and sent it to our buddy, saying, “We’ve got a record for you.” He loved it and was all in, but there was one small problem—he was out of the country for a few months and wouldn’t be able to start recording right away.
While waiting for him, we started compiling an album of all the singles we had lying around, which became “Future Greatest Hits”. It was scheduled for release in September 2018, but we needed something before that.
Time was crawling. We’re fast-moving creators, and sitting on this project was eating away at us. Tony suggested that I sing the album myself. I was hesitant. The record had a strong Elvis vibe, and I didn’t want my first album after a five-year hiatus to confuse people about my style.
I thought long and hard about it, even considering releasing it under an alias so that if it flopped, I wouldn’t take the hit. Every Wednesday, I’d meet up with a dear friend of mine, Loanne Parker, who was the widow of Col. Tom Parker, Elvis Presley’s manager. We’d been having lunch together weekly for nearly a decade. I played her some of the songs and explained the situation. She loved it and encouraged me to release it under my own name. I trusted her judgment and took her advice.
We released “Broke Down In Paradise” in August of 2018. It became the first album of mine to ever hit the Billboard Charts. That success kicked off a frenzy of creativity, with us knocking out songs day after day. The charts were eating them up—everything we touched seemed to turn to gold, so we rode the wave. I still feel a little bad for the guy we originally offered the album to, but I’m grateful for how everything turned out.
