INSIDE THE ALBUM with Frankie:
Looking back on our career can be an interesting experience. We’re usually so caught up in the moment, working on the next album or single, that we don’t often take the time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished. With touring and writing constantly in the mix, there’s hardly a moment left for introspection.
After releasing a few albums in quick succession and performing a lot, we decided to take a step back and look at some of the fan favorites—trying to understand why they resonated so deeply. We thought it would be cool to do a stripped-down, unplugged performance of those songs. We even wrote some new material to include, making it a super fun and introspective record to create.
We turned off all the lights, grabbed some acoustic guitars, poured a glass of wine, and just played our favorite songs without any thought of production. It was raw, natural music—pure and fulfilling. We wrapped up the record and had it ready for mass production when I was watching the final episode of a T.V. show called The Office. In it, Andy, played by Ed Helms, says, “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good ol’ days before you’ve actually left them.” Then, looking straight at the camera, he adds, “Someone should write a song about that.”
Well, that hit me. I grabbed my guitar and wrote the first verse and chorus of what would become “The Good Ol’ Days”. I called Tony and said, “Get over here first thing in the morning; I think I’ve got something cool.” He came over, we finished the song, and then called the distribution company to stop the album’s production immediately. We had to add this song to the album.
“The Good Ol’ Days” went on to become our biggest-selling song to date, hitting #1 on both the iTunes Pop and Blues charts.
