Growing up, my house was always filled with Rock ‘n’ Roll—especially Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, who’s records played nonstop. But at my grandparents’ house, the soundtrack was a bit different. While they loved Rock ‘n’ Roll too, the air there was filled with the timeless sounds of the Great American Songbook. My grandpa Manny was a huge Frank Sinatra fan, and he’d always have me listen to Sinatra’s music, talking about how classy and sophisticated it was.
My grandparents, Manny and Lilly, were the closest people in my life—they were my heartbeat. I could talk to them about anything. Grandpa would teach me piano chords while Grandma cooked sauce in the kitchen, with Sinatra serenading the room. They’d always say, “Frankie, one day when you play Carnegie Hall, you’ll know you’ve made it. But make sure to include at least one Frank Sinatra song in the set for us.”
Years later, after they had both passed away—a loss that left a huge void in my life—I received a call that felt like fate. I was asked to perform at Carnegie Hall. But it wasn’t just any performance; it was with the New York Pops Orchestra, and they wanted it to be a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Even more incredibly, the show fell on my grandpa’s birthday.
Walking on that stage felt like a dream come true. I knew in that moment that I could die happy. But I wasn’t alone up there—I felt my grandma and grandpa with me, nodding in approval. The night was magical, beyond words. Since then, I’ve sold out several of my own shows at Carnegie Hall, and continued touring the country, performing with orchestras. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having a 100-piece orchestra behind you—it’s almost impossible to describe.
Capturing that experience on a recording was a must, and that’s how Welcome To the Symphony came to be. It was our way of allowing people who couldn’t make it to the performances to experience the power of an orchestra. Creating this album was especially challenging due to licensing and copyright issues, but in the end, it turned out beautifully, and I couldn’t be happier with it.
